Book Club: Epitaph for a Peach

hosted by the Food and Wine Leadership Club

  • November 05, 2025 5:30pm - 6:30pm

We are excited to introduce the first annual book club, a new collaboration between the Food and Wine Leadership Club, the Innovation Institute for Food and Health and the Food Science Graduate Group. This is the first time these three organizations have partnered to host an event, and the goal is simple: bring people together to read, learn and connect around important conversations in food and agriculture.

The book club is open to everyone, including students, faculty and professionals from all fields and backgrounds. You don’t need to study food or agriculture to take part. If you’re interested in learning something new, meeting people with different perspectives or just enjoying a good story, this is for you.

Our first book is "Epitaph for a Peach" by David Mas Masumoto. It’s a heartfelt memoir about life on a family farm in California’s Central Valley, where Masumoto struggles to keep a delicate peach variety alive while facing the pressures of modern agriculture. His story touches on sustainability, resilience and the personal connections we all have to the food we eat.

What makes this event special is the collaboration of three groups that each bring unique strengths: leadership and industry engagement, innovation and problem-solving and deep food science expertise. Together, they create a welcoming space where anyone, whether you study business, science, humanities or something entirely different, can join the discussion.

Beyond the book itself, this is a chance to meet new people, share ideas and hear what’s happening in the food and ag world today. Everyone is welcome. Come join us for great conversation and connections!
