Course-Specific Policies
Late Drop Policy
Requests to drop a course after the standard 10 or 20-day deadlines require approval by advisors in the Business Advising Office (BAO). These petitions are considered only under specific unexpected circumstances beyond the student’s control and must include thorough supporting documentation. Examples include:
- Death in the immediate family or a significant increase in family care responsibilities.
- A substantial and necessary increase in work hours.
- Medical issues, verified by the Student Health and Counseling Services or a licensed physician.
- Serious personal issues, documented by a qualified professional.
- Other situations deemed to be of equal gravity.
If you believe your situation aligns with one of the above approved categories, please submit a late drop petition in OASIS. Students may be asked to set up an advising appointment to discuss their situation.
Additional Considerations:
- Late drop petitions submitted after the SIXTH week of the quarter must explain why an "Incomplete" grade (see below) cannot be granted. Petitions without this information may be returned.
- Late drop petitions submitted after the EIGHTH week of the quarter without documentation of recent extenuating circumstances will be denied.
- Late drop requests submitted in the SEVEN DAYS preceding the start of final exams are subject to heightened scrutiny. Any such requests submitted during this time that are absent of an extreme or extenuating circumstance will be denied.
- Late drop requests must be submitted no later than NOON on the last day of instruction to allow sufficient time for review and processing before the end of the workday.
Please note: Late drops will not be approved for reasons such as poor academic performance, difficulty understanding course material, a change in interest or lack of midterm feedback. Requests may take 5-10 business days to process.
If a late drop is approved and a Permission-To-Drop (PTD) number issued, it must be used within 72 hours or prior to 11:59 pm on the last day of instruction, whichever is sooner. You will be billed a $3.00 Late Drop fee for each course.
Incomplete Grading Policy
An Incomplete (“I”) grade at UC Davis may be assigned when a student has completed a significant portion of the course with passing work but is unable to complete all course requirements due to a valid reason.
Requesting an Incomplete Grade
Students who believe they may be eligible for an Incomplete must work directly with their professor to discuss their circumstances and remaining course requirements. The professor determines whether the student is eligible for an Incomplete based on the student’s completed work, the circumstances preventing completion, and the course requirements.
An Incomplete may be considered when:
- The student’s completed work is of passing quality and represents a significant portion of the course requirements.
- The student is unable to complete the remaining requirements for good cause, as determined by the professor.
- The circumstances are sufficiently serious to prevent completion of the course. Examples may include illness, serious personal problems, accidents, death in the immediate family, increased work demands, or other equally grave circumstances.
Work that is below passing quality does not qualify for an Incomplete grade.
Completing the Remaining Work
If an Incomplete is assigned, the remaining course requirements must be completed within three succeeding academic quarters in order for the student to earn credit.
Pass/No Pass Policy
Students must complete all required courses for the major on a letter-graded basis, unless courses are only offered on a P/NP basis. The Academic Senate limits the total number of courses graded P, including units earned in courses graded “P/NP only” to one third of the units completed on the UC Davis campus.
Late Pass/No Pass Policy
Late changes to the P/NP grading mode will be approved only in cases involving unexpected, unforeseen and/or extenuating circumstances that arise after the official P/NP deadline and significantly interfere with the student’s academic performance.
These petitions are considered only under specific unexpected circumstances beyond the student’s control, and must include thorough supporting documentation.
If you believe your situation aligns with one of the approved categories, please consult with your BAO advisor before submitting a petition.
Requests to change a P/NP grade back to a letter grade after the deadline will not be approved unless the course is required to be completed for a letter grade to satisfy a degree requirement.
Multiple Repeat Policy
For purposes of attaining a C average in coursework, a student may once repeat courses in which they received grades of D or F. Students must petition the Business Advising Office for approval of repeating a course more than once.
Course Exception Policies
Simultaneous Enrollment Policy
Students may not receive transfer credit for courses taken at another accredited institution during regular quarters (fall, winter or spring) while enrolled full time at UC Davis.
Exceptions may be granted in special cases, including:
- Commuting to UC Davis creates a hardship that limits participation in required course activities
- A schedule conflict prevents enrollment in a required course needed to graduate
- Completing a course sequence begun at a community college
Minimum eligibility for approval:
- Be in good academic standing
- Be enrolled in at least 12 UC Davis units
- Completed at least one quarter at UC Davis
Submit the Simultaneous Enrollment Petition to the Business Advising Office before enrolling in the non-UC Davis course. Include documentation supporting your request.
When approval is granted, units earned are counted toward minimum progress for the term in which the dual registration occurs.
Course Substitution Policy
Students may request substitutions for specialization courses and other non-core major requirements, subject to the following:
- Core courses* in the business major are not eligible for substitution.
- Upper-division substitutions are not allowed for online courses offered outside the University of California system.
Students must speak with their advisor and submit a course substitution request with the course syllabus for review.
*Core courses are: ARE 100A (or ECN 100A), ARE 100B (or ECN 100B), ARE 106, ECN 101, MGT 101, MGT 120, MGT 140, MGT 150, MGT 160 (or ARE 171), and MGT 180
Study Abroad Policy
The business major encourages students to broaden their academic experience by studying abroad. Students must receive pre-approval from a Business Advising Office advisor before enrolling in any courses they wish to apply to the major. Up to 16 units of upper-division coursework completed through study abroad may be applied to business major requirements. Courses proposed as substitutes must demonstrate comparable: topics and subject matter, assessments, instructional materials and prerequisites. Online courses are not eligible, and core courses* required for the major may not be fulfilled through study abroad.
