UC Davis Graduate School of Management (GSM) Professor Prasad Naik has been awarded the prestigious Humboldt Research Award, a lifetime achievement honor recognizing internationally leading scholars whose work has had a lasting impact on their disciplines.

Conferred by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the award is among Germany’s most distinguished academic honors. Established in 1972, it is granted to no more than 100 researchers worldwide each year across all fields.

Recipients are selected based on the depth, originality and sustained influence of their research contributions, positioning the award as a global benchmark for scholarly excellence. It is one of the most prestigious lifetime-achievement research awards globally, combining recognition, a funded research stay in Germany and long-term collaboration. The award amount is €80,000.

Naik’s recognition places him in rare company both internationally and within UC Davis. Historically, Humboldt Research Award recipients at the university have largely been senior, distinguished professors at the highest ranks of academia.

Naik’s Award First for GSM Faculty Member

Naik is the first faculty member from the Graduate School of Management to receive the honor, marking a milestone moment for the school and underscoring its growing research stature on the global stage.

“This award reflects the collective efforts of 50-plus coauthors from 17 different countries, whose contributions not just advanced the frontiers of knowledge via research publications, but shaped me personally in understanding what it means to pursue truth to be a scholar,” Naik shared in announcing the news to colleagues. “I’m deeply honored to be included among this group of researchers.”

The Humboldt Foundation’s mission is to foster international academic collaboration by connecting leading researchers with peers in Germany. As part of the award, Naik will have the opportunity to pursue collaborative research projects with German institutions, further extending the global reach of his scholarship.

Recognized Trailblazer in Marketing

Naik’s research has long focused on quantitative modeling and marketing strategy, with particular influence in areas such as competitive dynamics, innovation and emerging market behavior. His work is widely cited and has shaped both academic thinking and real-world marketing practice, which is a combination that aligns closely with the Humboldt Foundation’s emphasis on impact.

Last year, Naik was named the Robert W. Glock Endowed Chair in Management at the UC Davis GSM, honoring his influential research and teaching at the business school. In 2023, he was recognized with Northwestern University’s Don Schultz Award for Innovation in Integrated Marketing Communications, which honors professors or professionals who have shown excellence in teaching the principles of IMC and have created new frameworks to communicate with customers and drive financial performance.

For the Graduate School of Management, Naik’s Humboldt Research Award carries strategic weight. It signals the strength of its faculty research portfolio at a time when business schools are competing not only on program delivery and student outcomes, but also on intellectual leadership and global influence.

"The Humboldt Research Award singles out the impact of one's work and is seen as a career-crowning award," said Dean H. Rao Unnava. "Professor Prasad Naik's winning of this award is a testament to his illustrious career that focused on generating research of the highest caliber."
